Fibre vs LTE vs Fixed Wireless: What Is the Difference?

Many users ask what the real difference is between fibre, LTE and fixed wireless. The answer comes down to infrastructure, cost, performance and availability.

Fibre

Fibre uses fibre-optic cables to transmit data as pulses of light. Because light travels extremely fast and is not affected by electrical interference, fibre delivers very high speeds and extremely low latency.

It is ideal for heavy streaming, online gaming, large downloads and business cloud systems. The main limitation is rollout. Fibre requires trenching and physical infrastructure, which means it is not available everywhere.

LTE / Mobile Data

LTE runs through cellular towers, the same infrastructure used by mobile networks. It is convenient, widely available and quick to install.

However, LTE capacity is shared between many users on the same tower. Performance can drop during peak periods, and the cost per gigabyte is often higher than fixed broadband options.

LTE works well for moderate usage, temporary setups or areas where fixed connections are not yet available.

Fixed Wireless

Fixed wireless delivers broadband from an elevated tower directly to a specific location using directional antennas. The signal travels through the air rather than underground cables.

Because it is a fixed installation, the connection can be aligned and optimised for consistent performance. Deployment is faster than fibre and does not require trenching every property.

Which One Is Best?

There is no single best option.

Fibre offers premium performance where available. LTE provides mobility and flexibility. Fixed wireless delivers scalable broadband in areas where fibre rollout is limited.

The right choice depends on your location, usage needs and budget.
